What global warming? Antarctic ice is INCREASING by 135billion tonnes a year, says NASA

A NEW Nasa study of the Antarctic from space has thrown the case for climate change into disarray after finding that more NEW new ice has formed at the Antarctic than has been lost to its thinning glaciers.

The amount of ice at the Antarctic is INCREASING not going down, says NASANASA•GETTY
The amount of ice at the Antarctic is INCREASING not going down, says NASA
The US space agency research claims an increase in Antarctic snow accumulation that began 10,000 years ago is "currently adding enough ice to the continent to outweigh the increased losses from melting glaciers.
Global warming theories have been thrown into doubt after Nasa also claimed current horror predictions into future sea-level rises may not be as severe.
Major studies previously made the case for global warming being a man-made problem, including the the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) 2013 report, which said that Antarctica was overall losing land ice.
But a Nasa spokesman said: "According to the new analysis of satellite data, the Antarctic ice sheet showed a net gain of 112 billion tons of ice a year from 1992 to 2001.
"That net gain slowed to 82 billion tons of ice per year between 2003 and 2008."

Nasa agrees ice has been lost in the Antarctic Peninsula and the Thwaites and Pine Island region of West Antarctica.
But says the gains elsewhere, which total 200billion tonnes a year, outweigh all these losses of 65billion tonnes a year - leaving a net annual Antarctic ice gain of 135billion tonnes.
Jay Zwally, a glaciologist with Nasa Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and lead author of the study, which was published in the Journal of Glaciology, said: “Our main disagreement is for East Antarctica and the interior of West Antarctica – there, we see an ice gain that exceeds the losses in the other areas.”
Mr Zwally added his team “measured small height changes over large areas, as well as the large changes observed over smaller areas.”
Scientists calculate how much the ice sheet is growing or shrinking from the changes in surface height that are measured by the satellite altimeters.
In locations where the amount of new snowfall accumulating on an ice sheet is not equal to the ice flow downward and outward to the ocean, the surface height changes and the ice-sheet mass grows or shrinks.
Antarctic ice gain reduces sea levels by 0.23mm a year, says NASANASA

This small thickening, sustained over thousands of years and spread over the vast expanse of these sectors of Antarctica, corresponds to a very large gain of ice – enough to outweigh the losses from fast-flowing glaciers in other parts of the continent an
NASA spokesman
The study analysed changes in the surface height of the Antarctic ice sheet measured by radar altimeters on two European Space Agency European Remote Sensing (ERS) satellites, spanning from 1992 to 2001, and by the laser altimeter on Nasa’s Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) from 2003 to 2008.
It had been argued by the climate change lobby the gains in elevation seen in East Antarctica were due to recent increases in snow accumulation. But the Nasa team used meteorological data beginning in 1979 to show the snowfall in East Antarctica actually decreased by 11 billion tons per year during both the ERS and ICESat periods.
They also used information on snow accumulation for tens of thousands of years, derived by other scientists from ice cores, to conclude that East Antarctica has been thickening for a very long time.
The spokesman added: "Extra snowfall that began 10,000 years ago has been slowly accumulating on the ice sheet and compacting into solid ice over millennia, thickening the ice in East Antarctica and the interior of West Antarctica by an average of 0.7 inches (1.7 centimetres) per year.
"This small thickening, sustained over thousands of years and spread over the vast expanse of these sectors of Antarctica, corresponds to a very large gain of ice – enough to outweigh the losses from fast-flowing glaciers in other parts of the continent and reduce global sea level rise."

Mr Zwally said: "At the end of the last Ice Age, the air became warmer and carried more moisture across the continent, doubling the amount of snow dropped on the ice sheet.
"The good news is that Antarctica is not currently contributing to sea level rise, but is taking 0.23 millimetres per year away."
Mr Zwally, however, did warn there is no room for complacency.
He said it might only take a few decades for Antarctica’s growth to reverse.
He said: "If the losses of the Antarctic Peninsula and parts of West Antarctica continue to increase at the same rate they’ve been increasing for the last two decades, the losses will catch up with the long-term gain in East Antarctica in 20 or 30 years.
"I don’t think there will be enough snowfall increase to offset these losses.”
And Ben Smith, a glaciologist with the University of Washington in Seattle not involved in the research, said: "The new study highlights the difficulties of measuring the small changes in ice height happening in East Antarctica.
"Doing altimetry accurately for very large areas is extraordinarily difficult, and there are measurements of snow accumulation that need to be done independently to understand what’s happening in these places."

The "Antarctic Ice Sheet" refers to a sheet of ice that rests on the Antarctic continent. i.e. not sea ice.

This article does a fine job of distorting the global picture by focusing on one area while ignoring the global situation. It reminds me of the idiots who say, "I don't believe in global warming because my summer wasn't that warm." Localism is the worst bias that can be applied to a global phenomenon, and this is a great way to display it.

First they changed their tune from 'global warming' to climate change. In a few years it will change again back to the mantra of the 1970's with theories about 'global cooling' and we are all going to freeze if we do not pay these stupid taxes. Us old folk have seen it all before yet the young still scoff at us. Laugh all you like, you will be the ones paying for all this nonsense.

Antarctic ice is increasing but overall sea ice is decreasing. Some of it is simply flowing to the Antarctic which is why that cap is growing. NASA itself says ice loss is the key indicator of climate change. Silly news sites trying to twist the words of an actually reputable organization.

No. You are wrong. There is no AGW. Your peeps never had a theory, just a collection of computer models. And it appears their computer models are so flawed as to be useless in predicting trends in the climate. A blind man flipping a coin could do a better job of predicting climactic trends than the IPCC crowd.

You are suggesting sea ice is flowing south and jumping up on to the Antarctic continent?

NASA lost it's credibility when BO ordered it to forget space and concentrate on telling the world how great were the scientific developments from Islam. Hahaha! Now, to  keep their jobs NASA scientists all have to follow the AGW mantra from BO and not rock the boat. Truly pathetic times for science.

According to the Obama administration, the main goal of NASA is teaching math to Arab Muslims. Apparently the next mission is to peddle this man made global warming crap. There is absolutely no historical data showing any correlation between climate and CO2. All the Global Warming computer models are un-predictive. There are tens of thousands of glaciers worldwide. Scientists are only monitoring a few dozen. Some are shrinking, some are growing. Some are shrinking due to local effects, such as Mt Kilimanjaro where population and city growth has altered the airflow near the mountain, causing the glacier to shrink. The sun controls 99% of the climate. There is very good historical correlation between the number of observed sunspots and climate.

Sea level rise has accelerated, perhaps in spite of more ice accumulation in eastern
Antarctica. Not sure where the three statements in large font came from--certainly not from this article or from N

The sea level rise has increased over the past 40 years, due to the combination of warming oceans and melting ice. Note sure why the results of this study are attributed to NASA, as they are just one group of NASA scientists. Not sure where the statements in large font came from--they are not results of this study or conclusions of NASA.

And where on the Earth can we observe this sea level rise? How can we differentiate Land Subsidence from Sea Level Rise?

Land subsidence is measured too, so it is simply added to the sea level rise to get relative sea level rise.

This is hardly breaking news. As the article says, Antarctic sea ice has been increasing for decades. The IPCC's reports have documented and predicted this. Unfortunately, some people still have the idea that global warming means every part of the globe will warm, however it's just global averages that are predicted to warm. Sorry to break it to you, but global warming is still happening. Net gains in ice does not equal global cooling, as climate is far too complex.

When this tale is spouted by an independent world renowned scientist with accompanying proof then him I might believe, some child fresh out of brainwashing college whose been force fed this garbage from their first day at the infants school isn't about to convince me. I'm 60, our 'climate' hasn't altered one iota in that time, we had a few years with minimal snow compared to others but on the whole theres no change and I have read all the guff too. AGW has gone through at least five incarnations since it was first reported to be the end of the world coming due to 'The hole in the ozone layer', when this graduated into CO2 emissions through its previous multiple metamorphosis I knew for a fact we are being lied to, the greatest scam played on mankind in its history, on that there is no doubt.

I hate to tell you this, but there was no "hiatus" or "pause". It never existed except in the minds of idiots like Watts and the morons that repeat his stupidity. CO2 causes a .01 deg C increase in GMT for each ppm-V of CO2. The second greatest factor that causes variability of the GMT is ocean heat exchange.

The Koch Foundation funded the reevaluation of the temperature anomaly data by John Mueller, a notable skeptic with a PhD in physics. His analysis determined that global warming is entirely correct that the data accurate Berkeley Earth, the organization that was started by the funds, maintains the most comprehensive dataset.

An analysis of this dataset definitively proves that your statement of no statistically significant warming is simply wrong.

The history of global warming has numerous periods of time, ranging from five to 30 years, where the rate of increase was substantially reduced. And every time, it has returned to the upward trend because, CO2 causes a .01 degree C increase in temperature per ppm-V CO2.

Just as has happened on numerous occasions, the warming after 1997 was slowed 0.010374 degrees per year. This is statistically significant with a p-value of 3.70e-09. The standard error is about .001 which puts the 99% confidence interval above zero.

Not too many years ago these very GW 'scientists' were jumping through hoops to announce the Arctic was melting at a mahoosive rate in one particular year, however they failed to report in the very next Arctic winter that the polar icecap had mahoosively increased, funny how they can come up with the doom and gloom to suit themselves but fail to report the 'good news'.

The arctic ice is growing and the hole shrinking but once the climate scientists have adjusted the data it's the opposite. Data adjustments are an essential part of climate science because it all looks very boring otherwise.

Not only is the Antarctic ice growing but so is Greenland ice - so it's not just NH vs SH. In the last 2 months Greenland has added 200 billion tons of ice and snow - much above the norm.

Of course climate change is real. There has been 60 ice ages in the quaternary period (about 2.58 million years). Only 10,000 years ago northern Scotland was under 2 Km of ice, and 13,000 years ago so was much of what is now England. I'd like to know who the 2% of scientists are who deny climate change - and where they got their degrees (£50 in Nigeria?)

Everyone knows climate change is real and has been ever since the earth was formed it has had many ice ages and many hot periods so what the argument is about is whether it is man made. Do try and keep up. If you believe that it is how do you explain what happened in the past.

Would you like to read again what I posted? I was replying to Kevin23 who posted "98% of scientists agree that climate change is real.' and I wanted to know who the other 2% were, and where they studied for their degrees. As you quite rightly say, "Everyone knows climate change is real".
I do NOT believe climate change is man made as other planets in our solar system show evidence of ice caps waxing and waning as they do on Earth. It is probably more to do with the solar maximum and minimum cycle which is over a period of about 11 years. Two things are certain. 1. There will be another ice age in the near future. 2. Man made climate change deniers get little or no funding.

You are such a fool. You have just stated that there were 60 ice ages therefore there were 60 warming periods such as the one we are in now. Ice ages last approx. 90,000 years and the warming periods last about 12,000 years. Two conclusions. One is that cooling and warming are cycles. Two is that it has happened 59 times while the Earth had no humans to cause it. AWG is a 20 billion dollar industry. Good for the ones on the payroll but bad for every one else.

As for man-made catastrophic climate change based on computer models of third-rate 'scientists' which have been shown to have zero predictive capability - I don;t think many people believe that.
